Chiropractic is a system of healthcare focused on restoring, preserving, and optimizing health by natural hands-on care. Chiropractic focuses primarily on the biomechanics of the body. Looking at the relationship between structure, alignment and function.
This unique relationship can generate adverse effects such as your pain and discomfort, but when performing correctly can lead to the preservation and restoration of health.
At Coast to Country Chiropractic, our Chiropractors take a holistic approach to treatment, focusing not only on the spine, but alignment and dynamics of the the entire body as well as looking at any lifestyle improvements that can be adapted to further improve your quality of life. Chiropractic care may help with:
Where conventional or “allopathic” medicine focuses on curing illness through surgery and pharmaceuticals, the goal of chiropractic is to optimize health with a non-invasive approach that does not use drugs or surgery. Chiropractic’s primary avenue of care is manipulation of the spine and the framework of the body.
The spine is an important structure that houses and provides protection for the spinal cord, while providing mobility for the upper body. This dual requirement of strength and flexibility makes the spine a very complex structure, with multiple joints at each spinal segment (the vertebrae) forming the spinal column.
The word “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words ‘cheir’ (hand) and ‘praxis’ (action) simply meaning “done by hand”. Most people will associate chiropractic with the treatment of back pain by treating the spine. Where spinal joints, known as articulations, are not positioned or functioning normally it causes biomechanical dysfunction of the area resulting in muscle spasm, facet joint irritation & inflammation and can affect the nerves exiting the spine. Chiropractic care attends to these irritations along the spinal by manually repositioning these joints – This is a “chiropractic adjustment”. In addition to the adjustment, other techniques are applied to thoroughly treat any secondary issues such as muscle spasm or postural imbalances.
Back pain & Spinal Dysfunction may be a Chiropractors bread and butter, but chiropractic can be utilised to treat a wide variety of conditions all over the body. Just like the spine is treated for low back pain, we can apply the same fundamentals to any musculoskeletal area of the body. For Example, Tennis Elbow would be treated by examining the biomechanics of the elbow and forearm region and treating the skeletal/joints with adjustments and addressing any ligamentous or soft tissue problems to eliminate the dysfunction producing your pain and resulting in a properly functioning elbow joint.
Chiropractic clients often visit their chiropractor periodically in order to simply relieve these irritations – “to get adjusted”. Individuals also seek chiropractic care for back pain, neck and shoulder tightness, headaches, joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, as well as non-musculoskeletal conditions including pregnancy related pains, allergies, asthma and digestive disorders. For many conditions, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care is frequently the primary method of treatment. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the neuromuscular aspects associated with the conditions.
Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for clients with chronic conditions. By treating the neuromusculoskeletal elements of such disorders, chiropractic treatment has been shown to improve the general well being of the client. Chiropractic works by not just relieving your pain, but by fixing the source and root cause of your pain. It is an important fact to remember. Your spine houses your Central Nervous system which controls every facet of our body. The first step to attaining real health is a nervous system that is functioning to its optimal potential.
